BMKG: Beware Of Merak Operational Disorders Due To Supermoon And Rain

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to the public, especially port operators, to be aware of potential disruptions in loading and unloading operations and shipping at Merak -Bakauheni Port due to a combination of supermoon phenomena and high rainfall in early and late December 2025.

The potential for the maximum sea level increase is feared to interfere with port operations during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) 2026 period.

Head of the BMKG Data and Information Working Group MerakTrian Asmaradi explained that this condition needs to be a concern for all stakeholders in the port sector.

"If we say the maximum, there will definitely be an impact, there will definitely be an impact on loading and unloading," Trian said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, December 3.

To minimize risks, he continued, BMKG has prepared a Christmas-New Year weather monitoring post at a number of piers with the Merak Harbormaster Office and Port Authority (KSOP). This monitoring post will work in real time to monitor tidal waves and changes in marine dynamics.

"So we continue to inform KSOP, we inform the weather potentials, if there is bad weather, for the next hour or the next three hours," Trian continued.

He emphasized that short-term weather information is the key so that port managers can adjust the loading and unloading schedule and ship departures.

BMKG also appealed to people who would travel by sea not to ignore weather conditions, especially during the peak of the homecoming and backflow of Nataru.

"And people don't need to worry too much. If there is bad weather, we will inform you and KSOP will act to prioritize the safety and comfort of passengers during Nataru," he said.

This appeal is given to ensure passengers remain vigilant without causing panic.

In addition to potential disturbances at Merak Port, BMKG also noted the risk of tidal flooding in several coastal areas of Banten. This increase in seawater can have an impact on coastal settlements, ponds, and economic activity.

BMKG predicts that the tidal wave will hit the north coast of Serang and Tangerang on 513 and 2026 December 2025, the coast of the West Sunda Strait of Pandeglang on 1016 and 2324 December 2025, and the southern coast of Pandeglang and Lebak on 917 and 21 28 December 2025.

The BMKG asked coastal communities to monitor periodic information, secure valuables, and avoid activities in areas prone to being submerged.
