West Sumatra Coastal Residents Asked To Be Alert, Rob Flood Potentially Occurs This Week

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of the Teluk Bayur Maritime Meteorological Station, Padang City, West Sumatra (West Sumatra) reminded the public of the potential for tidal flooding on December 3-7, 2025 due to high tides in the coastal area of the province.

"There is the potential for tidal flooding due to high tides due to the new super moon or super moon along with the potential for moderate rain," said Head of BMKG Maritime Meteorological Station Bayur Sahat Mauli Pasaribu, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, December 2.

Sahat said tidal flooding has the potential to occur in the coastal areas of West Sumatra, including West Pasaman Regency, Agam Regency, Padang City, Padang Pariaman Regency and Pesisir Selatan Regency and Mentawai Islands Regency with a low category impact.

As for the potential impact, he said, is sea water inundation which is estimated to be three to 10 centimeters with a distribution of 20 to 100 meters from the shoreline. In general, on December 5, there will be an ordinary astronomical event, namely the full super moon, which has the potential to cause tides to be higher than usual.

This includes the potential for moderate rain which can be accompanied by winds on December 3-7 in the waters of West Sumatra, and the Mentawai Islands accompanied by sea waves estimated to range from 0.5 to 1.2 meters with wind speeds of 2 to 10 knots.

"It is predicted that the maximum tide on December 3-7 is 1.3 to 1.5 meters at around 18.00 to 20.00 WIB," he said.

Based on these conditions, the local BMKG appealed to people on the coast or coastal areas of West Sumatra and Mentawai to remain vigilant even though the potential for tidal flooding had a low category impact.
