Ukraine Urges NATO To Continue Air Defense Support

JAKARTA - Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal urged further air defense support from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), when meeting with Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Monday.

Defense Minister Shmyhal's insistence on Secretary General Rutte was carried out in line with Russia's continued missile and drone attacks.

Defense Minister Shmyhal in a post on Telegram wrote he thanked Rutte for her "leading and support" and briefed her on the development of the battlefield and Ukraine's priority defense needs, reported by Anadolu (2/12).

The meeting focused on strengthening Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

"The key issue is to strengthen air defenses. To counter the terror of missiles and Russian unmanned aircraft, an air defense system and additional interceptors are needed," he said.

Defense Minister Shmyhal said the Ukraine Priority Requirement List Initiative (PURL) remained "very important" to the supply of ammunition and stable equipment.

He stressed that Ukraine continues to adjust its defense sector to NATO standards and is advancing joint projects with partners.

The PURL Initiative is a US-NATO program that allows NATO member countries Europe and Canada to fund the purchase of American-made weapons for Ukraine.
