President Putin To Receive US Special Envoys This Afternoon In Moscow
JAKARTA - Russian President Vladimir Putin is planned to receive US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow Tuesday afternoon, to discuss the latest proposal by President Donald Trump's administration to end the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said.
"The meeting with Witkoff is planned for tomorrow (today)," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a briefing on Monday, adding the meeting would take place "in the afternoon," as quoted by The Moscow Times (1/12).
Witkoff is expected to arrive in Moscow with Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, to discuss the peace framework prepared by US and Ukrainian officials last weekend in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Kremlin did not name Kushner in a statement on Monday. Meanwhile, this will be Witkoff's sixth visit to Russia since January.
The draft peace plan comes amid a new wave of diplomacy that began after an initial peace proposal consisting of 28 points leaked in the media last month. The initial proposal was compiled by the Trump Administration and, reportedly, Kremlin officials.
The initial framework was later summarized to around 20 points, and US officials have hinted that Ukraine approved a revised version.
However, it remains unclear whether President Putin will support the change, which sources say is "far better" for Ukraine than the initial list of provisions, which are widely considered closer to Russia's position.
