M 5.2 Earthquake Occurs In Aceh Jaya

JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 shook calang area, Aceh Jaya Regency, Aceh.

Based on information released by the Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 49 km at coordinates 4.34 LU and 95.26 BT. The earthquake occurred at 10:05 p.m., Monday, May 24.

The location of the earthquake is known to be at sea, 48 kilometers (km) southwest of Aceh Jaya Regency.

Tremors were felt around Banda Aceh and Nagan Raya on a scale of II to III Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), as well as the Aceh Jaya region on a scale of III MMI.

The Mercalli scale is one of the units to measure the strength of an earthquake, especially if there is no ascometer equipment at the scene.

On scale II, vibrations are felt by some people, light objects are hung swaying.

While on a scale iii, vibrations are felt real in the house. It felt as if a truck was passing by.

Quoted by Antara, there is no reported tsunami potential due to the earthquake, but BMKG urges the public to be aware of possible aftershocks.
