MUI Together With DGT Forms Task Force To Formulate Tax System Improvements

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) together with the Directorate General of Taxation (DJP) have agreed to establish a joint force tasked with reviewing the fatwa recommendations and formulating steps to improve the national tax system to be fairer and more accountable.

Chairman of the MUI for Fatwa, Asrorun Niam emphasized that MUI is ready to collaborate in providing religious and ethical guidelines to strengthen the national tax system so that it is in accordance with Islamic values.

"MUI is committed to assisting the government in ensuring that taxation policies run fairly, transparently, and do not conflict with sharia principles. This synergy is important to strengthen the foundation of the national economy," Niam said in Jakarta, Friday, November 28.

The formation of the TaskForce Team was carried out after the Director General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance, Bimo Wijayanto and high-ranking officials of the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) held a meeting at the Office of the Indonesian Ulema Council.

During the meeting, the two parties discussed in-depth the fair tax scheme that the government had been trying to do, as well as following up on the MUI Fatwa on Fair Tax set out in the XI MUI National Conference forum on November 22, 2025.

According to Niam, taxes are an important instrument in realizing the welfare of the people and the sustainability of national development.

Therefore, he emphasized that tax management must be in line with the principle of justice which is one of the basic values in Islamic law.

Taxes are an important instrument for the state to present public welfare. However, the collection must uphold the principles of justice, proportionality, and not burden the small community," said Niam.

He emphasized that the MUI's fair tax fatwa was issued as a scientific and moral contribution to strengthen national tax governance to make it more transparent, fair, and have a real impact on the welfare of the community.
