Komnas HAM Investigate Irene Sokoy's Death Case Which Was Rejected By 4 Jayapura Hospitals

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) investigated the case of the death of Irene Sokoy and the baby she was carrying after being rejected by four hospitals in Jayapura on November 17, 2025.

Komnas HAM Commissioner for Monitoring and Investigation Saurlin Siagian said his party was seriously investigating the incident and made this case a priority for Komnas HAM to be resolved immediately because this is related to the future of the nation's children.

"This is related to the future of children so that a pregnant woman should be treated specifically in a condition that must be served properly," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, November 26.

According to Siagian, his party considered this incident as a form of neglect to a pregnant woman, causing the death of the mother and the baby she was carrying.

"That's why we strongly condemn this incident because in the context of human rights this is a waiver," he said.

Chairman of Enforcement and Advancement of Human Rights, Komnas HAM Papua Representative Melchior Weruin said that today his party asked for information from Yowari Hospital, but at the same time the Papuan Regional Police (Polda) were still asking for information from the hospital.

"So that tomorrow morning we will ask for information from Yoware Hospital and then to Abepura Hospital," he said.

He said this incident had received attention from President Prabowo Subianto so that Komnas HAM immediately conducted an investigation to immediately convey recommendations to the public who should be responsible in the case.
