Rain Still Guyur Padang In The Middle Of Large Floods, Here's The Current Condition

JAKARTA - Heavy rains that fell relentlessly in the city of Padang, West Sumatra, throughout the day, again triggered floods, landslides, and fallen trees at a number of points. The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Padang City together with provincial BPBD, the National Police (TNI), and related agencies are still carrying out emergency handling at affected locations.

Since early morning, the flow of flooding with a large discharge hit the area along the Min River down. Materials of tree trunks and mud hit people's houses in Lubuk Min down, Central Koto District. Four residents died in this incident, while a number of houses were damaged.

In Pauh District, the connecting bridge in Koto Luar broke after being hit by material carried by the flood currents. Officers are still guarding the area to prevent residents' activities given the condition of the structure that is no longer safe.

Data from the West Sumatra Province BPBD Operations Control Center noted that the impact of extreme weather occurred in 17 sub-districts in 7 sub-districts. In addition to floods and landslides, there are 14 fallen tree points that are still in the process of being handled. Update of victim data and damage is still being carried out.

In a virtual ministerial meeting, West Sumatra Deputy Governor Vasko Ruseimy explained the current conditions.

"The latest data in West Sumatra, 12 people died and some 12,000 people were affected," said Vasko, Thursday, November 27.

He also explained the challenges faced by officers in the field, including material cleaning and disruption of access to communication.

"The landslide points on the collapsed road, fallen trees in several districts and cities," he added.

The Padang City BPBD prioritizes evacuation and security of areas that are considered to have the potential to threaten the safety of residents. Handling efforts take place in the midst of rainfall that has not shown a sign that it will subside.

The West Sumatra Provincial Government has established an emergency response status. Several other districts and cities affected by extreme weather will soon follow setting similar statuses.
