Asrorun Niam Sholeh Emphasizes The Importance Of Fair Taxes In MUI Fatwa
JAKARTA The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) emphasized the importance of implementing fair taxes, following the emergence of public unrest due to the increase in Land and Building Taxes (PBB) which was deemed not on target. This affirmation was conveyed by the Head of the MUI Fatwa Division, Asrorun Niam Sholeh, at the XI MUI National Conference in Jakarta last weekend.
Asrorun Niam explained that tax objects should only be imposed on assets that have productive value and/or are included in the category of secondary and tertiary needs.
"Tax levies on basic necessities such as basic necessities, houses, or the earth we live in do not reflect the justice and purpose of collecting taxes," he said as quoted by Antara.
According to him, the essence of taxation is a burden that is only imposed on citizens with adequate financial capacity. He likened this standard of ability to mal zakat nishab, which is equivalent to 85 grams of gold. That value, he said, could be a reference for determining the PTKP (No Taxable Income) limit.
