Mount Bur Ni Telong Status Rises Aceh Up To Level II, Seismic Activities Increase

JAKARTA - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has raised the activity status of Mount Bur Ni Telong in Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh from Level I to Level II or Alert as of Tuesday, November 25 morning at 09.00 WIB.

Head of the Geological Agency Muhammad Wafid explained that the status increase was carried out after visual and instrumental analysis showed an increase in seismic activity around the volcano, one of which was triggered by a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 in the early hours of this morning.

"The potential danger of Bur ni Telong can be in the form of an eruption triggered by a tectonic earthquake in the vicinity," Wafid said as quoted by Antara.

The Geological Agency confirmed based on monitoring records. During 00.00 a.m. 06.00 a.m. local time, 18 deep volcanic earthquakes, six local tectonic earthquakes, and six distant tectonic earthquakes were recorded. The frequency of this volcanic earthquake is said to have increased since July 2025.

Wafid explained that regional tectonic activity around Bur Ni Telong contributed to the increase in seismicity. However, visual observations show no gusts of crater smoke have been observed to date.

The potential hazard that must be watched out for is in the form of eruptions due to earthquake eruptions and eruptions without a significant increase in seismicity, as well as exposure to volcanic gas in solfatara and fumarol seepage areas that can endanger the safety of residents.

For this reason, the Geological Agency recommends that people, visitors, and climbers not approach the crater of Mount Bur Ni Telong within a radius of 1.5 kilometers, and avoid solfatara and fumarol (fractional holes) areas during rainy or cloudy weather due to potential gas exposure.

Wafid said monitoring would continue to be carried out through field instruments and observations, and the status of the mountain activity would be reviewed if significant visual or seismic changes were found.

The Geological Agency asked the public to remain calm, follow the officers' directions, and access official information through PVMBG and the Bur Ni Telong Volcano Observation Post in Serule Kayu Village, Bukit District, Bener Meriah.
