Highlights Soybean Imports Reach 2.6 Million Tons, Titiek Suharto: We Use Tofu-Tempe

JAKARTA - Chairman of Commission IV DPR RI Titiek Soeharto highlighted the high number of Indonesia's dependence on soybean imports.

Based on the data it has, Titiek said Indonesia still has to import around 2.6 million tons of soybeans.

Titiek also wondered why Indonesia still depends on soybean imports. In fact, according to him, most Indonesians like to eat processed soybean products, such as tofu and tempeh.

"We are a tempeh tofu-eating nation, soybeans must be a priority. The need for soybeans is 2.9 million tons per year, our production is only 300,000, 350,000, 400,000 tons," he said in a meeting of Commission IV of the DPR with Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, at the DPR Building, Jakarta, Monday, November 24.

"Our imports are 2.6 million tons, a lot. How much is it corrupted? There are so many, trillions, sir," he continued.

Even so, Titiek appreciates the achievements of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) which has accelerated the target of self-sufficiency in rice this year.

He also asked soybean commodities not to be forgotten.

"This (soybeans) must be a concentration too. Now we appreciate that we can self-sufficiency in rice, self-sufficiency in corn. Please in the future self-sufficiency in soybeans," he said.

Kita makan tempe tahu, impor kedelai segitu,” tuturnya.

In addition, Titiek also asked that the program to increase soybean production be revived.

Previously, the government through Perum Bulog had a program to increase the production of three main commodities, namely Rice, Corn, and Soybeans or Pajale.

"In the past you had the Pajale program, try to revive it, so that in the future you don't import 2.6 million (tons). That's a shame sir. We eat tempeh tofu, import soybeans that much," he said.
