Trump Claims Ukraine's Peace Plan Is Not Final, Kyiv And Allies Are Alert
JAKARTA - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, emphasized that the peace proposal containing 28 points related to the Russian conflict "Ukraine is still flexible and has not yet become a final decision."
This statement was made after the draft sparked concern from both Kyiv and its international allies.
"We want this war to end. This conflict should have been over for a long time, it should have never even happened," Trump told reporters when he left the White House on Saturday. He stressed that his government was looking for a way to stop the war, with various options still being discussed.
"No matter how, the war must be stopped," he continued. However, Trump also added that if Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejects the proposal, Ukraine could continue the 'strong' resistance.
Draft's peace plan reportedly contained a number of sensitive conditions, including the handover of additional territory to Russia, restrictions on Ukraine's military power, and the termination of the country's official efforts to join NATO.
Trump gave Zelenskyy a deadline until Thursday to respond to the proposal.
In response to the situation, Zelenskyy said that he was faced with a difficult choice: "maintaining our dignity or risking relations with our main partners."
Concerns were also voiced by leaders from nine European countries along with Japan, Canada, and top EU officials. They warned that restrictions on the Ukrainian military could make the country more vulnerable to the threat of aggression in the future.
Russia launched what it called a special military operation' in February 2022 on the grounds of "denazification" and demilitarization of Ukraine. In addition to demanding Ukrainian military restrictions and discontinuing efforts to join NATO, Moscow also wants Russian to be recognized as the country's official language.
