Spain Investigates Meta For Alleged Violation Of User Privacy

JAKARTA - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday 19 November that his government would conduct an investigation into Meta, Facebook's parent company and Instagram for alleged violations of the privacy of its platform users.

The investigation was sparked by the findings of a number of international research centers that revealed that Meta used a hidden mechanism to track the users' web activities of Android devices, a statement from Sanchez's office said.

Sanchez insists that Spanish law cannot be defeated by any major technology algorithm or company. anyone who violates our rights has to bear the consequences," he said in the statement.

The government also said that Meta was suspected of violating a number of important EU regulations related to security and privacy, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), ePrivacy Directive, Digital Markets Act, and the Digital Services Act.

In addition to formal investigations, Meta will also be called to testify before the Spanish House of Representatives committee.
