Replace DM, Platform X Launches Encrypted 'Chat' Feature
JAKARTA X, formerly known as Twitter, has re-newed its features. This time, the platform with hundreds of millions of global users released Chat, the latest version of the more encrypted Direct Messenger (DM).
Chat was announced on November 15, 2025 and now the feature is widely available on iOS and the web version. As usual, X prioritizes the iOS version so Android users have to wait longer to get the update.
Even though DM is replaced with Chat, users' old messages are promised not to disappear from their apps or platforms. X says that all messages will still be saved even though the messaging system has been replaced with a better version.
The improvement in the Chat feature is very helpful in terms of security. This feature offers end-to-end encryption (E2EE) support for all messages and files. That way, all user messages will remain safe and will be difficult to access by third parties.
Although it is confirmed safe, X provides important notes regarding this E2EE support. X's support page states that encryption does not cover message metadata such as who received or when the message was sent.
X also admits that this feature is not 100 percent secure because there are certain security vulnerabilities. Elon Musk's platform states that users cannot find out if any 'bad insiders or X themselves' are endangering encrypted conversations.

Despite the risks that monitor users, X promises the presence of additional security features. For example, an option to receive notifications when the chat is screenshot. There will even be an option to block the screenshot completely in the conversation.
Interestingly, Chat is not just exchanging messages as the name suggests. This feature also supports video and voice calls so users don't have to exchange numbers or usernames for third-party applications just to make calls.
Overall, this feature is the evolution of the encrypted DM Twitter has introduced in 2023. This encrypted feature was temporarily suspended in May for 'purification' before it was finally launched as Chat.
