OnePlus 15 Experiencing Heating Issues with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in Testing
JAKARTA - The OnePlus 15, powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, apparently experienced temperature management issues during a rigorous stress test. During the intensive test, the device overheated, forcing the system to shut down and restricting access to apps, despite its large 7,300mAh battery. While the device remains safe for daily use, heavy gamers and emulator users may experience long-term performance limitations.
As the latest flagship, the OnePlus 15 offers high performance and easily handles daily tasks and single-run benchmarks. However, according to testing conducted by Android Authority, its performance changes drastically when the chipset is pushed under heavy graphics loads for extended periods.
In repeated stress tests—designed to simulate prolonged gaming sessions—the OnePlus 15 struggled to maintain its performance. Several times, the device failed to complete the benchmark sequence and even forced the process to close due to overheating.
In one 3DMark test, the device's external temperature reached 52.7°C, a level too high for comfortable use. Afterward, the device stopped the benchmark and restricted access to non-essential apps until the temperature cooled down.
These results raise questions about the cooling system within the sleek flagship's design. For comparison, other devices with the same chipset, such as the REDMAGIC 11 Pro, were able to complete the test thanks to an aggressive cooling system that included an internal fan. Worse still for OnePlus, its sibling device, the Oppo Find X9 Pro with the Dimensity 9500 chipset, was able to complete the test without any overheating issues.
OnePlus' Response
In response to the report, OnePlus stated that the stress test was much more demanding than normal usage or even most popular games. The company asserted that the device remained within normal temperature limits for everyday use. They explained that the shutdown occurred because the processor reached a "thermal ceiling" under extreme loads.
It's true that under light to moderate usage, the OnePlus 15 operated without issues. However, the device's inability to maintain peak performance for extended periods is a concern for heavy users—especially gamers, emulator users, or those who require stable frame rates in competitive gaming sessions.
The OnePlus 15 is still a relatively new device on the market, so hardware and software optimizations are likely still underway. Users and observers hope that OnePlus will introduce heat management improvements in future updates or subsequent production batches.
