Ma'ruf Amin Explains The Reason Why Waqf Has Not Been Working On Maximum In Indonesia

The 13th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Ma'ruf Amin said that the management, which has not been maximized, is the main reason that the potential for waqf funds in the country has not been fully exploited.

"The potential for waqf is very large, which is around Rp. 180 trillion per year but it has not been managed properly," said 13th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Ma'ruf Amin quoting Antara.

According to the Vice President for the 2019-2024 period, to maximize the huge potential of waqf, the government and related parties need to prioritize more systematic handling, strong institutions to increase the capacity of human resources as managers.

The chairman of the seventh Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) said the International Waqf Conference could be a strong literacy for Indonesia, especially West Sumatra Province, how to maximize waqf potential.

In his presentation, Ma'ruf Amin said modern waqf management can be used for the construction of universities, hospitals, injections of funds for micro, small and medium enterprises to global investments aimed at providing benefits and welfare for the people.

"So, this waqf is not only limited to spirituality but also sustainable economic development," he said.

In fact, he believes that if waqf is really managed properly, social problems such as poverty in Indonesia can be overcome. However, at this time this potential has not been managed properly.

"The problem is that so far we have not organized waqf properly, including collective awareness of how to make waqf a sustainable source of economy and welfare," he said.

Separately, West Sumatra Governor Mahyedi said the area has a long history in the tradition of waqf and Islamic education, where many mosques, Islamic boarding schools, and educational institutions stand on waqf land. Through this conference, he hopes that new collaborations will be born to strengthen West Sumatra's role in the development of productive waqf and sharia economy.
