Turkey Grounded Military Cargo Plane C-130 After Accident

Turkey has temporarily suspended flights of the C-130 military cargo plane as a precaution, following an accident in Georgia that claimed the lives of 20 military personnel on board.

The unlucky cargo plane was flying from Ganja, Azerbaijan to Turkey when it crashed in the municipality of Sighnakhi, Georgia, near Azerbaijan's border, on Tuesday. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The military personnel are part of the unit responsible for the maintenance and repair of the Turkish F-16 jet that flew to Azerbaijan to participate in the celebration of the country's Victory Day.

The event marked the success of Azerbaijan's military in 2020 over Armenia to control the Karabakh region, known internationally as Nagorno-Karabakh, a conflict that has lasted nearly four decades.

Turkey's Ministry of National Defense said flights C-130 were temporarily suspended to allow the aircraft to undergo detailed technical inspections.

Only those who have successfully passed the inspection will be allowed to continue the flight.

Reported by ABC News, Thursday, November 13, the C-130 military cargo aircraft is widely used by the Turkish armed forces to transport personnel and handle logistics operations.

Turkey sent an accident investigation team to determine the cause of the accident.

The ministry said flight data recorders and cockpit voice data recorders of the aircraft had been sent to Turkey and were being questioned in Ankara.

The plane was purchased from Saudi Arabia in 2012 and added to the Turkish Air Force inventory in 2014 after undergoing treatment procedures.

The aircraft was then modernized and has been in use since 2022. The last scheduled treatment was completed on October 12, the ministry said.

The ministry said there was no ammunition on board when it crashed.

The wreckage of the plane was scattered in several locations, while the bodies of the 20th victim were found on Thursday.

The funeral will be held after the body is returned to Turkey and the autopsy is complete.
