Retail Sales Performance Continues To Improve, Driven By Demand Ahead Of Christmas 2025

JAKARTA - Bank Indonesia (BI) said that retail sales performance in October 2025 is expected to increase, both monthly and annually.

This estimated increase is reflected in the October 2025 Real Sales Index (IPR) which is projected to grow 4.3 percent year on year (yoy), higher than the previous month's growth of 3.7 percent (yoy).

Executive Director of the BI Communication Department Ramdan Denny Prakoso explained that the increase in retail sales was mainly driven by growth in food, beverage and tobacco groups which rose 6.4 percent (yoy).

In addition, sales of cultural and recreational goods grew 4.7 percent (yoy), and other household appliances increased by 0.3 percent (yoy).

On a monthly basis (month to month/mtm), retail sales in October 2025 are estimated to grow 0.6 percent, turning positive after previously experiencing a contraction of 2.4 percent (mtm).

"It is driven by the sales performance of the majority of groups in line with the increase in public demand ahead of the preparation of the Christmas National Religious Holiday (HBKN)," he said in his statement, Tuesday, November 11.

Some groups that recorded an increase in monthly sales include 3.4 percent of other household appliances (mtm), 0.5 percent of cultural and recreational goods (mtm), 1.1 percent of food, beverages, and tobacco (mtm), as well as 2.4 percent of spare parts and accessories (mtm).

Furthermore, in September 2025, IPR recorded a growth of 3.7 percent (yoy), an increase from the previous month which was 3.5 percent (yoy).

"This growth is mainly supported by increased sales of spare parts and accessories groups, food, beverages, and tobacco, as well as cultural and recreational goods," he said.

Meanwhile, monthly retail sales in September 2025 still contracted by 2.4 percent (mtm), mainly due to a decline in sales in the clothing subgroup.

In terms of prices, inflationary pressures in the next three to six months, namely December 2025 and March 2026, are expected to increase.

This condition is reflected in the General Price Expectation Index (IEH), which was estimated to reach 157.2 in December 2025 and 172.5 in March 2026, respectively, higher than the previous periods of 134.6 and 169.2.

"The increase is in line with the increase in demand during the 2025 Christmas HBKN and 2026 Eid Al-Fitr HBKN," he said.
