Criminologist UI: Schools Must Have A Report Mechanism And Bullying Handling

JAKARTA - University of Indonesia (UI) criminologist, Dr. Ni Madeur Puteri (Tinduk), highlighted the explosion case at SMAN 72 North Jakarta which was allegedly triggered by the victim's experience being targeted by bullying.

He emphasized the importance of schools having a clear system in preventing and handling bullying cases.

"Schools must have a reporting and bullying mechanism. Prepare teachers and trainers to understand this issue," said Dr. airing to VOI Saturday, November 8, 2025.

According to him, the reporting system must maintain the confidentiality of victims and whistleblowers. Schools also need to establish standard operating procedures (SOP) that provide full protection for victims.

"Don't deny that a bullying incident didn't happen. Don't force the victim to forgive, but ask the perpetrator to apologize to the victim," he said.

Dr. Badminton also reminded the importance of building a school culture that actively prevents bullying. He encourages every student to participate by not being silent if they see bullying taking place.

"Take a stand and show the perpetrator that we do not agree with bullying. Provide support for victims in public," he said.

In addition, socialization to parents is also considered important in order to understand that bullying is a form of violence that cannot be justified.

"Learn the perpetrator to be responsible and apologize," he said.

He emphasized that because bullying is a form of violence, schools that do not respond and take action against these cases are tantamount to not protecting victims.

"Because bullying is violence, schools that do not respond and take action against bullying, mean not protecting victims and even violating children's rights to security," he concluded.
