Honda Recalls More Than 400 Thousand Civics Due To Risk Of Free Wheel

JAKARTA Honda Motor Co., Ltd. recalled as many as 406,290 vehicles in the United States due to production defects that allow 18-inch aluminum wheels regardless of their hubs. This information was revealed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Friday, November 7.

This withdrawal includes the Honda Civic model from 2016 to 2021 which is fitted with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels as an accessory. NHTSA said the defect had the potential to cause the wheels to be separated from the vehicle while traveling, thus posing a safety risk for drivers and other road users.

Honda will instruct all its authorized dealers to inspect affected vehicles and replace hubs and wheels if needed, free of charge for vehicle owners. However, until now there has been no appeal for a ban on driving for all units on the recall list, as reported by Reuters, Saturday, November 8.

This problem is known to come from the production process of the accessories wheel. In some units, the insertion seating of the bent wheel (lug seat insert) is not installed properly or even missed, so it can cause the wheels to become loose and finally let go.

Although there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to these defects, Honda and NHTSA are still making withdrawals because the risks they pose are considered significant to safety.

For owners of the 2016-2021 Honda Civic model who use 18-inch aluminum alloys in the United States, the company advises to immediately contact Honda's official dealer to check whether their vehicle is included in the recall list.
