Meta Asked To Stop Using 'PG-13' Label On Instagram Youth Account Sesatly

JAKARTA The Motion Picture Association (MPA), an American trading association representing five film studios in the US, has asked Meta to stop using the 'PG-13' rating on content on Instagram youth accounts.

According to the MPA, Meta uses the label 'wrong and very misleading'. To avoid improper content distribution, this label is expected to disappear from the account for users under the age of 18.

Launching from The Verge, the order to terminate the use of this label was issued on 28 October. This order was also triggered by the Meta announcement issued last October regarding an update to the Instagram youth account.

In the update, the company that oversees Instagram and WhatsApp, announced that teens' accounts will only see content that is 'similar to what they see in the film PG-13'. However, this update was issued on personal initiative.

The MPA stated that Meta had never contacted them regarding the use of the label. The institute added that Meta's efforts to limit content did not follow the strict 'curation process' used by the MPA in ranking.

For the MPA, this curation process is very important. The reason is, their rating system has been built with public trust for decades and Meta cannot use it without the MPA licensing process.

"The Meta claim that their Teen Account will be 'guided by' or 'aligned by' the PG-13 MPA rating ... has the potential to erode trust (public against the label)," the MPA wrote, reported on Thursday, November 6.

Although the use of this label is considered fatal, Meta does not seem guilty. The company actually said that it met the requirements for using the PG-13 rating as a reasonable use.

Meta insists that they have never claimed their Teen Account offers were officially ranked or certified by the MPA. Meta confirmed that they stated the opposite explicitly so that the use of the label was considered reasonable.
