YOGYAKARTA - Bad dreams can indeed make a person feel afraid, anxious, or restless. In Islam, a person is advised to read a prayer after a nightmare so that it does not happen, as well as to calm down after waking up and asking for God's protection.

Quoted from the book Tafsir Mimpi Menurut Al-Qur'an dan as Sunnah by Muhammad Ibnu Sirin, there are two types of dreams, namely dreams that come from Allah SWT and dreams that come from the devil. Sometimes, we can experience nightmares and trigger anxiety that makes us suspicious.

In Islam, there are instructions and recommendations from the Prophet Muhammad SAW on how to deal with nightmares. Check out the full explanation below!

Things Recommended When Having a Bad Dream

Quoting the book "For You Who Are Sick: How to Cleanse, Pray, Pray and Dzikir When Sick" by Ammi Nur Baits, there are several things that the Prophet taught when someone has a nightmare. Among others:

Spit to the left three times Ask for protection from Allah SWT from the devil three times, with the reading of ta'awudz: I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the devil Ask for protection from Allah SWT from the evil of the dream Get up and pray immediately Change the sleeping position It is best not to interpret the dream Prayer After a Bad Dream So It Doesn't Happen

Quoting the book "The Importance of Prayer and Dzikir for a Happy and Prosperous Life" by M. Khalilurrahman Al Mahfani, the following is a prayer to read when having a nightmare:

"By Allah, I seek refuge with You from the deeds of the devil and the evil of the people.

Allaahumma innii a'uudzubika min 'amalisy syaithaani wa sayyi- aatil ahlaami.

"O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the deeds of the devil and the evil of dreams."

Sunnah Before Sleeping

Quoted from the book Sunnah-Sunnah Rasulullah Sehari-Hari by Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamoud Al Furaih, below are a number of adab or sunnah before going to bed that can be done to avoid nightmares.

Cleaning the Mattress Before Sleeping

Before going to bed, a person is advised to clean or shake the bed accompanied by reading bismillah. In this case, the Prophet Muhammad said:

"If one of you is going to sleep, let him take a piece of cloth and shake his bed with it while saying, 'Bismillah,' because he does not know what happened after his death." (HR. Al-Bukhari no. 6320).

Sleep in the Early Evening

This recommendation is based on the hadith of the Prophet SAW regarding the unsuitability of discussing something that is not useful after the Isya time. From Abu Barzah: "The Prophet did not like to sleep before the Isya' prayer and to discuss after it." (HR. Bukhari and Muslim).

Wudhu Before Bed

The recommendation to pray before going to bed is in the hadeeth of al-Baro' bin 'Azib, the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said: "If you go to your bed, then wudhu is like wudhu for prayer". (HR. Bukhari no. 247).

In addition to being protected from nightmares, people who pray before going to bed will also get prayers from angels. From Ibn Umar RA, the Prophet said:

"Whoever sleeps at night in a state of purity (wudhu), then angels will follow, then when he wakes up, the angel will say: 'O Allah, forgive your servant, so and so, because he slept at night in a state of always being pure.' (HR Ibnu Hibban)

Lying on the Right Side of the Body

The Prophet SAW tends to dislike sleeping in a prone position. This is as explained in the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW:

"If you go to your bed, then wudhu is like wudhu for prayer, then lie down on the right side of your body" (HR. Bukhari no. 247 and Muslim no. 2710).

Reading Surat Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Naas

Before going to bed, the Prophet Muhammad blew on both palms of his hands and read the letters Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Naas, and then rubbed them on the body.

This is as the hadith narrated by Aisyah: "The Prophet Saw when he was in bed every night, he gathered his palms together and then the palms were blown and the 'Qul huwallahu ahad' (surat Al Ikhlas), 'Qul a'udzu birabbil falaq' (surat Al Falaq) and 'Qul a'udzu bi rabbin naas' (surat An Naas) were read."

"Then he rubbed the palms of his hands on the body parts that could be reached, starting from the head, face, and front body. He did this three times." (HR. Bukhari no. 5017).

Reading the Ayat Kursi

Furthermore, a Muslim is also encouraged to practice the verse of the kursi. Because, this verse can protect us from bad things that are not wanted, one of which is a nightmare.

"If you want to lie down on your bed, read the verse of Al Kursi because with it you are always guarded by Allah Ta'ala." (HR. Bukhari no. 3275).

Reading Prayers Before Bed

After undergoing the above sunnah, then in the final stage before we fall asleep is by reading the prayer before going to bed.

Bismillah, Allahumma ahya wa matu

Bismika allahumma ahyaa wa bismika amuut

"By the name of Allah, who gives life and causes death."
