Dwikorita Retired Tasks, UGM Professor Teuku Faisal Leads BMKG To Face Climate Challenges

JAKARTA - Professor of Civil Engineering at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Prof. Teuku Faisal Fathani officially replaces Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati as Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Head of the Public Relations Division of BMKG Akhmad Taufan said the handover of positions between Dwikorita and Faisal was held on Monday morning in Jakarta and was led by the Minister of Transportation Duddy Purwagandhi.

"Yes, this morning at nine o'clock," said Taufan when confirmed in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, November 3.

The inauguration and taking of the oath of office of Prof. Faisal is scheduled to take place at the Office of the Ministry of Transportation on the same day. The process refers to the provisions in Government Regulation Number 11 of 2017 concerning Civil Servant Management as amended by PP Number 17 of 2020.

The replacement of the BMKG leadership was carried out in line with the retirement period of Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati, who has led the institution since November 3, 2017.

Dwikorita is known as the first female rector of Gadjah Mada University and is an important figure in modernizing BMKG services. He encouraged the development of a disaster early warning system based on science and digitizing weather information throughout Indonesia.

In addition, Dwikorita is also active in global climate organizations and is an executive member at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

At the end of his term of office, he encouraged the capacity of young BMKG researchers to pursue doctoral studies at world-famous universities, including Oxford University in the UK.

Meanwhile, Prof. Teuku Faisal Fathani is known as an academic and disaster expert from UGM who is actively researching landslide early warning systems and mitigating hydrometeorological disasters. He earned a doctorate in Geotechnic and Sabo Engineering from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan, in 2005, and was confirmed as a professor in 2017.

Faisal has also served as General Chair of the Taruna Nusantara High School Alumni Association (IKASTARA) for the 2020-2023 period. He is an alumni of the school's first batch and is widely known among ground scientists because of his work in research and disaster service in various regions.
