231 Indonesian Citizens Report To Each Other, Indonesian Embassy Yangon Strengthens Protection Efforts In Myawaddy

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Yangon, Myanmar continues to strengthen efforts to protect Indonesian citizens (WNI) in the Myawaddy area, Kayin State, as reports increase regarding the existence of Indonesian citizens who are indicated to work on online scam activities in the area.

In recent days, the Indonesian Embassy received three new reports covering 148 Indonesian citizens in three separate locations in the Myawaddy area.

"Initial information from the reporters is currently being thoroughly verified, and assistance efforts are carried out by prioritizing the security, safety, and confidentiality of the data of Indonesian citizens who are still in vulnerable situations," wrote the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon in his statement, as quoted on November 1.

Since the situation emerged on October 22, 2025, 30 Indonesian citizens have crossed into Thailand in recent days and are currently under the handling and assistance of the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok.

"Thus, since the incident on October 22, 2025, there have been a total of 231 Indonesian citizens who have been reported through various information channels, with different statuses, placement locations, and level of vulnerability," said the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon.

"The efforts to handle various Indonesian citizens groups are carried out in stages, measurable and careful, taking into account the dynamics of security in the field as well as through close coordination with the authorities in Myanmar, as well as related partners in the regional countries," explained the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon.

The Indonesian Embassy in Yangon emphasized its commitment to take the necessary steps firmly and proportionally in accordance with the applicable legal corridors and diplomatic procedures. The Indonesian Embassy also appealed to the Indonesian people to be aware of unofficial foreign work offers.

"A number of cases show that there is a recruitment mode in other countries first, before the victims are smuggled into Myanmar border areas to be illegally employed in online scam activities," explained the Indonesian Embassy.
