PLTMH Waira Opens New Economic Opportunities In East Sumba

JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung assessed that the presence of the Wairara Micro Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH) in East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), not only presents electricity, but also opens up new economic opportunities for the community.

"This access to clean energy is not just a matter of light. This opens up new economic opportunities," said Yuliot when confirmed from Jakarta, ANTARA, Thursday, October 30.

According to Yuliot, the existence of PLTMH Wairrara has triggered the growth of productive businesses in villages, ranging from ikat weaving craftsmen who can now work longer, to night learning activities for children.

"Wairara is the first village in the region to truly be free from darkness," he said.

PLTMH Waira with a capacity of 128 kilowatts (kW) utilizes the Pakuhuay River. The water flow now powers electricity for 105 household connections, schools, health centers, sub-district offices, village offices, and houses of worship.

Yuliot explained that this change also had a real impact on the energy efficiency and economy of the village. Previously, residents depended on diesel power plants (PLTD) which consumed around 62 thousand liters of fuel oil (BBM) per year.

Now, with micro-water power, electricity production costs have dropped drastically to 0.03 US dollars per kWh. The savings, said Yuliot, make the village treasury and people's expenses lighter.

If you use diesel, 1 liter can reach up to IDR 20 thousand when you arrive at the location. If the PLTMH, there is no need for fuel, and the electricity is turned on 24 hours according to the needs of the community," he said.

Furthermore, Yuliot said that the Wairara PLTMH is managed directly by Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) as a form of strengthening the local economy and sustainable management.

"With the management by BUMDes, the treatment of PLTMH can run well and independently," he said.
