JAKARTA - It was reported that 64 people died on Tuesday in the deadliest police operation ever in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, targeting drug gangs.
The operation was carried out days before the city hosted a global event related to the United Nations (UN) climate summit known as COP30.
The death toll confirmed by Rio Governor Claudio Castro on Tuesday, including four police officers, more than double the death toll in Rio's previous deadly police operation.
"We stand firm againstnarcoterrorism," Castro wrote on social media about the operation, which he said involved 2,500 security personnel at the favela Alemao and Penha complex, near the city's international airport.

Reported by Reuters, the police released a video showing the suspects using grenade armed drones to attack the police. The footage also shows gunmen fleeing to forest areas near the site of the operation.
After the fierce fighting subsided, a Reuters journalist saw police from a special operations unit gathering dozens of shirtless men. Sobbing family members gathered outside a public hospital to treat those injured.
The Rio state government called Tuesday's operation the largest operation ever targeting the Comando Vermelho gang.
Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski said the federal government had not received a request for support from state authorities before the "bloody" operation.
Next week, Rio will host the global C40 summit of mayors discussing climate change and Prince William's Earthshot Prize, which will feature celebrities including pop star Kylie Minogue and four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel.
