Allegedly Referred By Drunk Residents, Mamberamo Raya Police Personnel Attacked With Parang And Batu Linggis
Papuan Police are still investigating the motive behind the attack by a group of mobs against Mamberamo Raya Police personnel, which caused a number of members to be injured and damaged operational vehicles and building facilities.
Head of Public Relations of the Papua Police, Kombes Cahyo Sukarnito, said the incident occurred last Tuesday at around 12.00 WIT in Burmeso Village, Central Mamberamo District, Mamberamo Raya Regency.
According to reports received, the incident began when the Mamberamo Raya Police SPKT officer received information that there was a commotion among residents suspected of being under the influence of alcohol around the Advent Burmeso Elementary School intersection.
"Officers immediately went to the location to calm the situation. However, suddenly the masses attacked members with sharp weapons such as machetes, as well as other tools such as crowbars and stones," said Cahyo in Jayapura, Antara, Wednesday, November 30.
Due to the uncontrolled situation, officers were forced to resign and ask for additional help from the SPKT headquarters. However, when reinforcements arrived, more and more people attacked again, resulting in clashes and riots at the location.
"From the information we received, the attack on the community was led by YT, one of the local community leaders," said Cahyo.
He emphasized that the police are still investigating the motives and parties involved in the attack.
Even though there was a riot, the situation in Mamberamo Raya is now reported to be conducive. Officials are still on standby to maintain security and ensure that residents' activities return to normal.
