Sarmi Police Intensify Raids on Canister Cannons to Prevent Explosions and Fires
JAYAPURA - The Sarmi Police, through the Community Development Unit (SatBinmas), are intensifying raids and raising awareness about the use of can cannons, spirit cannons, and firecrackers in several areas.
The Head of the Sarmi Police Community Development Unit, Adjunct Commissioner Yulius Mapeni, stated that these efforts are aimed at preventing potential explosions and fires that could threaten public safety, especially in the lead-up to religious holidays and New Year's celebrations.
"The outreach and enforcement efforts were carried out in several locations, including Sarmi City, Kampung Mararena, and Kelapa Satu. During these efforts, officers directly advised the public not to make, sell, or play with can cannons and firecrackers, as they can pose serious dangers," he said in Jayapura, Antara news agency, Tuesday, October 28.
According to Yulius, his team also urged the public not to store or use hazardous materials such as spirit to make can cannons.
"Besides violating regulations, this activity carries a high risk of causing burns, fires, and even explosions," he said.
He explained that in addition to the outreach, officers also confiscated evidence in the form of 10 canister cannons, several bottles of spirit oil, and firecrackers from residents at several locations.
"So, going forward, we will continue to conduct routine patrols and similar enforcement actions throughout the Sarmi Police jurisdiction. We hope the public will be more aware and actively participate in maintaining environmental security by not using homemade explosives," he added.
He added that he wants all Sarmi residents to celebrate the holiday safely and without casualties.
