Earthquake 6.3 SR Shakes NTT, Vibrations Can Be Felt To Kupang And Maumere

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 rocked the northwestern region of North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Monday, October 27 at 00.04.28 WIB.

Based on the BMKG's official website monitored in Jakarta, the earthquake point was at sea at coordinates 9.06 degrees south latitude and 123.97 degrees east longitude, about 82 kilometers northwest of North Central Timor, with a depth of 75 kilometers.

Earthquake shocks were felt on an intensity scale III of the IV Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) in a number of areas, including Maumere, Ende, Kefamennu, Kupang, Waingapu, and Lembata.

The Mercalli scale is one of the units to measure the strength of the earthquake, especially if there is no seismometer equipment at the scene, as quoted from the BMKG website.

On the MMI III scale, the vibration is felt real in the house. The vibration felt as if a truck had passed.

Meanwhile, on the MMI IV scale, the tremors during the day were felt by many people in the house, outside by several people, pottery broke, windows/doors tightened, and walls sounded.

People in the affected areas are advised to be alert to possible aftershocks.
