Netflix Closes Game Studio Behind 'Squid Game: Unleashed'

JAKARTA - Netflix closed the developer studio behind the 'Squid Game: Unleashed' mobile game, as part of a strategic change in its video game division.

The studio closure was confirmed by one of the founders and former CEO of Boss Fight Entertainment, David Rippy, via uploads on LinkedIn on Thursday, October 23.

"It's a pretty tough news, of course, but I'm very grateful for the time we have on Netflix," Rippy wrote.

The giant streaming company, which in recent years has begun to venture into its advertising and video game business to expand its source of revenue, acquired Boss Fight Entertainment in 2022 to enrich its game portfolio.

"After more than 10 incredible years on Boss Fight, in recent years as part of Netflix, now is the time for this studio to close," said David Luehmann, director of game development at Boss Fight, in another LinkedIn post.

Netflix has yet to provide official comments when questioned by the media.

However, two games made by Boss Fight, namely 'Netflix Stories' and 'Squid Game: Unleashed', will remain available on the Netflix platform.

Last year, Netflix appointed Alain Tascan as president of the gaming division. Under its new direction, the company plans to focus more on party, narrative, children and mainstream games.

In Netflix's earnings call earlier this week, Greg Peters' Co-CEO highlighted Squid Game: Unleashed as an example of the type of narrative game Netflix wants to continue to develop based on its original series
