While participating in the Gymnastics World Championships, the Baltimore-born gymnast's best record was just two bronze medals.
The two medals were each won in the 2014 Gymnastics World Championships for the United States team and the vault number in the 2015 edition.
"Over the years, I know where my position is among the best in the world, and I feel it just takes a moment to really show everyone what I'm capable of," he said.
This victory made Whittenburg the first American male gymnast to win a gold medal in the ring number. At the age of now, he is also the America's oldest gymnast to win the gymnastics world title.
"The only target is the 2028 Olympics. I will continue to fight as hard as possible to make that dream happen. Anything is possible," he said.
