Deepfake Losses Reach IDR 700 Billion, Nezar Affirms The Importance Of Mitigation Efforts

JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, emphasized the importance of cybercrime mitigation efforts using artificial intelligence (AI)-based deepfakes that are increasingly occurring in the digital world.

He said the amount of losses due to the fraud mode by utilizing AI was reported to have reached Rp700 billion, so mitigation efforts were needed to prevent this crime from occurring.

"This AI-based deepfake product, when used to commit crimes, is extraordinary to deceive the public," said Nezar at the 2025 Kumpul Connect For Change Summit, Jakarta.

Because of this, he added, the government is currently preparing a National AI Roadmap as well as an AI Presidential Regulation (Perpres), which requires AI developers to be accountable and transparent.

"We encourage all developers to be ethical, transparent, and accountable when they produce AI-based platforms," he stressed.

According to Nezar, there are still many AI products that are made unethically, such as not including the information that the content was created by AI. According to him, users must reveal themselves that the video or photo was made by AI.

"We are still seeing AI videos or images that don't include the AI product logo. I think it's unethical," he said.

Nezar emphasized that Komdigi is collaborating with law enforcement officials to enforce the law against cybercriminals through the Information and Electronic Transactions Law (ITE), the Personal Data Protection Law (PDP), and the Criminal Code (KUHP).

Meanwhile, on the community side, the Ministry of Communication and Industry also provides education to the public about the dangers of AI-based deepfakes.
