Fraud Detection Present On WhatsApp And Messenger To Protect Elderly From Fraud
JAKARTA Meta introduced a new fraud detection feature for its two messaging apps, namely WhatsApp and Messenger. This capability is designed to prevent online fraud targeting the elderly.
On WhatsApp, the company will now display a special security warning as users try to share the screen during video calls. This warning will appear when the contacts involved in the call are unknown contacts of the user.
This warning will be very useful because screen sharing techniques are most often used to trick victims. This is done to obtain sensitive information such as bank details and a covert verification code, as revealed by Meta.
Meanwhile, Messenger is now testing a much more sophisticated fraudulent detection technique to analyze suspicious incoming messages. If any signs of fraud are detected, Messenger will immediately notify its users.

A warning that reads 'be careful, you risk losing money' will appear on the screen if Messenger detects the suspicious message. This suspected message can be forwarded to Meta AI for further review.
The warning screen on Messenger will also list various common fraud techniques. These techniques include job offers from home or offers to make money easily or commonly referred to as easy money.
As part of the launch of this new feature, Meta announced that it has joined the National Elderly Fraud Coordination Center. This institution brings together big companies looking to tackle scams such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.
