Arteta Comments On Simeone's Clashes With Liverpool Supporters Ahead Of Arsenal Vs Atletico's Match

JAKARTA - Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said managers have a responsibility to set an example ahead of Diego Simeone's first game returning to England after he clashed with Liverpool supporters. He added that it was not always easy in the midst of a hot situation.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has been banned from a one-match on the sidelines by UEFA following chaos at the end of a 2-3 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in September 2025.

Simeone, who has served the ban and will be sidelined against Arsenal on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, early morning WIB, admitted that he regretted the incident.

"If you react in a bad way, we have a responsibility to be an example. I've done it."

"I've made mistakes. However, I try to learn and try not to do it again."

"It's hard not to react because you're defending your club, players and little details in the end being able to determine whether you win or not."

"We were there with high emotions and difficult to control. We became very emotional and started running with our players and celebrating goals."

"It's natural and must be understood with respect. Based on my experience over the years, I try to calm down a bit, but there are times where it's not easy," Arteta said of Simeone.

Arteta will face Simeone for the first time in a group match. The Arsenal manager aims to build two wins for his team in the Champions League so far.

The coaching style of this Spaniard has drawn comparisons with Simeone, who is now entering his 15th season of coaching the La Liga team.

"Obviously he is someone I admire and have learned from him in many situations. I judge him at the highest level."

"What he has done since joining Ateltico Madrid has been extraordinary. It's not only what he has accomplished, but also the way he did it -- the identity he has created at the club, the team, the spirit, everything is very simple and easy to recognize. It's because his manager really reflects them."

"It was very difficult to achieve in a short time and doing it for 14 years was something extraordinary. So, it would be nice to meet him," said Arteta again.
