BPBD Records 2 Injured Residents As A Result Of The M 6.6 Sarmi Earthquake In Papua

JAKARTA - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) noted that two residents of Munukuna Village in South Sarmi District, Papua, were injured as a result of an earthquake measuring magnitude (M) 6.6 that hit Sarmi on Thursday, October 16.

"The two victims were reportedly injured because when the earthquake occurred they fell from a Jambu tree and another was hit by the rubble of a collapsed window," said Head of BPBD Sarmi Darius Nari to Jayapura, Tuesday, as reported by Antara.

Darius said the two injured residents had received medical treatment at the nearest health center.

When asked about the handling of residents affected by the earthquake, Darius Nari said that gradually the assistance had been distributed to affected residents.

Five districts were recorded as affected by the earthquake, namely Tor Atas, Sarmi, East Coast, South Sarmi, and East Sarmi District.

The earthquake that occurred on Thursday, October 16, is estimated to be 1.94 degrees South Lintan (LS)-139.03 degrees East Longitude (BT) or about 32 kilometers southeast of Sarmi Regency with a depth of 18 kilometers and is felt on a scale of V MMI and it is estimated that the center is located around the East Coast, precisely on Masi-masi Island.
