Bryan Adams Calls Hit Run To You Had Been Offered To Other Bands

JAKARTA - Bryan Adams is known to have expertise in collaborating. Not only singing his own songs, but also writing compositions for a number of big names such as Kiss and Joe Cocker.

However, there is one important moment in his musical career, where he almost lost one of his biggest songs to another. The song in question is "Run to You," the opening single of Adams' fourth studio album, "Reckless" (1984).

Adams also reminisced about his early career as a songwriter with his loyal collaborator, Jim Vallance. In a recent interview with 97.1 Rock, he told how they often deliberately challenged themselves to create specific songs for certain musicians, although the path to convey the song was still unclear.

"In the past, when I worked with Jim Vallance and we were trying to carve out a name as a songwriter, sometimes we put ourselves in a position, 'Okay, today we're going to write songs for this one and that one,' although we don't know how to send them that song,' Adams said, quoted by UCR, Thursday, October 16.

This creative approach often yields good results. "Run to You" is one example. Adams said the song was originally created for the US rock band Blue host Cult. Unfortunately, fate said otherwise.

"They never got it, or if they got it, producer Bruce Fairbairn, whom we gave the song, never played it for them," Adams said.

Not only Blue Cluster Cult, but another band that was considered to be the recipient of this song was 38 Special. Although the rock band as long as it didn't take "Run to You", they then recorded another Vallance/Adams collaboration, "TEACHer, Teacher," which became the Top 40 hit after being released as part of the soundtrack for the film Teachers (1984).

"Run to You" was later recorded by Adams himself and became an important part of the album 'Reckless'. The song was a huge success, reaching its peak at No. 6 on the Billboard charts.

The success of this song led Reckless to a fantastic achievement. The album was recorded as the first Adams album to sell more than one million copies in Canada, and has even now been certified more than 10 times platinum in its home country.

Globally, 'Reckless' sold more than 12 million copies, making it Adams' second best-selling album, losing only to the album 'Waking Up the Neighbors' (1991). Interestingly, the six singles from this album, including "Run to You," managed to penetrate the Top 20 Billboard.

The good news that Blueester Cult failed to take the song was also relieved by Adams guitarist Keith Scott, who recalled a hopeful telephone conversation with Adams.

"I remember the phone call. (Bryan) said, 'I just wrote this song. That's for Blueester Cult. But I don't think they will keep it.' I immediately replied, 'Please don't give the song!'" Scott concluded.
