QRIS Overtakes Credit Cards, Airlangga: Financial Operators Start To Get Angry

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that Indonesia continues to encourage the strengthening of the national economy through various strategic steps such as strengthening the digital economy.

He conveyed that one of them was through the signing of cooperation in local currency transactions or Local Currency Transaction (LCT) with a number of partner countries.

"Negara-negara yang sudah bekerja sama dengan Indonesia antara lain Malaysia, Thailand, Jepang, China, Korea dan United Arab Emirates," ujar Airlangga dalam acara 1 Tahun Pemerintahan Prabowo-Gibran, Kamis, 16 Oktober.

He explained that with LCT integrated with digital payment systems such as QRIS, Indonesians can carry out cross-border transactions without having to rely on foreign currency or credit cards.

In addition, according to Airlangga, the use of QRIS is now starting to exceed the use of credit cards.

"QRIS apparently overtook the use of credit cards, so various operators began to see how fast we could move," he explained.

He added that the current number of QRIS users has reached 56 million and this shows the resilience of the digital economy.

"So we have resilience. So don't worry about losing in the digital field," he said.

Airlangga also emphasized that Indonesia's digital economy is showing significant growth, with a value of up to 150 billion US dollars.

According to him, the digital economy is more resistant to trade tariff barriers because its products are digital and can move across borders.

He conveyed that one of the indicators of digital economic growth can be seen from the growth of the logistics and warehousing sector which reaches 8 percent far above the national economic growth average.

Airlangga also encouraged the role of the Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI) in encouraging the national digital economy.

"Well, this is what Pak Pandu might be as the Chief Investment Officer of the archipelago. This is very overloaded to be able to invest to boost the digital economy going forward," Airlangga concluded.
