Empathy takes an equal position, without looking down on or provoking compassion. Reported by Psychology Today, Tuesday, May 18, Elizabeth A. Segal, Ph.D., a professor from the School of Social Work at Arizona State University suggests ways to empathize that can improve health.

Empathy can save lives

Using empathy in life can benefit those around you. In fact, empathy can reduce stress and prevent fatigue. Reading and getting to know other people can help you make good decisions for yourself.

You can adjust the situation when you see people screaming, running, or getting scared. This happens automatically without you knowing it. And this can be a handle when in dangerous situations.

Empathy connects you with other people

Since empathy is about feeling and understanding other people's experiences, it makes you connect with those around you.

Although empathy requires a process of staying connected and attached to other people, it also has to do with how we feel understood and reciprocate those feelings.

Empathy can reduce stress

Studies have shown that when we can regulate our emotions, we are better able to relate to other people in a positive way. This is known as emotion regulation, which is the ability to accept other people's experiences without being overwhelmed.

This ability can also relieve stress through physiological mechanisms. At first in a state of alert stress hormones will be prepared for us to act. Over time, alertness will be flexible, especially when engaged in an empathetic manner so that it is better able to regulate emotions and stress under control.

Empathy as a fatigue reliever

Fatigue is often felt at work which can distract focus and disperse concentration. This can lead to unhappiness at work, frustration, and depression.

In a study conducted by Segal and his team, it was shown that the higher a person's empathy, the lower the feeling of fatigue at work. Difficult work situations and stagnant communication can be overcome by understanding other people.

Empathy guides a person to be more moral

How to treat others and expect to be treated can be guided by empathy. Being empathetic helps us to identify acceptable behavior. When engaging in 'safe' behavior it means that we tend to protect ourselves from bad actions.
