Peru President Dina Bouarte Impeached Parliament
JAKARTA - Dina Bouarte was officially impeached from his position as President of Peru on Friday local time after the Peru Congress approved the impeachment motion through a vote.
The decision was reached after the majority of Peruvian Congressmen agreed to the motion to start the impeachment process against Boluarte.
"The President of the Republic of Peru has approved (the impeachment) of President Dina Bouarte Segarra. Thus, the process of succession of positions set by the Peruvian Political Constitution will be implemented," according to the Peruvian Congress in a statement on social media X reported by ANTARA from Sputnik
According to a Comercio newspaper report citing Juan Carlos Portugal, Bouarte's lawyer, the impeached president refused to attend the parliamentary meeting because he did not want to give legitimacy to a process that "violates his constitutional rights".
The impeachment process began with representatives of a number of political parties in the midst of the country's increasingly severe security situation due to the increasing crime, according to the Peru RPP radio report.
The impeachment motion of Boluarte was also reportedly signed by representatives of seven political party factions at the Peru Congress.
In recent years, Peru has faced a significant increase in criminal cases, with incidents of murder, theft, and extortion spreading in the country. This condition has also triggered several strikes and major demonstrations by the Peruvian people.
