Hybrid Pikap BYD Shark Ready To Enter Chinese Market At A Cheaper Price
JAKARTA BYD is preparing to launch its flag-in hybrid pickup truck (PHEV), BYD Shark, to China's domestic market. This news was conveyed by General Manager of Public Relations BYD Group, Li Yunfei.
He ensured that the launch of the domestic market version had entered the planning stage. Interestingly, Li said Shark prices in China would be cheaper than export versions.
"We did sell this item internationally first, but the Chinese market will get a more competitive price," Li said in a post on his Weibo account, as quoted by Carnewschina, Thursday, October 9.
For information, BYD Shark was first launched in Mexico in May 2024, and as of September 2025, more than 30,000 units have been sent to overseas markets. In dimensions, Shark has a length of 5,457 mm, a width of 1,971 mm, a height of 1,925 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,260 mm.
This truck is also capable of carrying five passengers with a load capacity of 1,450 liters and a maximum load of up to 835 kilograms. For performance, BYD Shark relies on a plug-in hybrid system that combines 1.5 liters of turbo gasoline with two electric motors.
This combination produces a total power of 320 kW or around 430 horse power, as well as a peak torque of 650 Nm. The power is channeled to a four-wheel drive system (AWD), while the LFP battery with a capacity of 29.58 kWh is capable of providing pure electric travel distance of up to 100 km, and the total combined distance reaches 840 km.

Fuel consumption is also relatively efficient, only 7.5 liters per 100 km. The price of BYD Shark in the international market varies., such as Mexico, this model is sold starting at 899,980 pesos or around Rp765 million, while in Australia it is priced at AUD 57,900 or around Rp595 million/
With prices lower than the global market, BYD hopes that the domestic version can become the prima donna in the hybrid pickup segment. China's own electric and hybrid pickup market is growing rapidly.
Throughout January to August 2025, more than 49,000 new energy pickup units were sold, an increase of more than five times compared to the same period last year. This spike is also supported by the easing of government regulations which now allow pickups to operate in more urban areas.
With a combination of high performance, fuel efficiency, and competitive prices, BYD Shark has a great chance of capturing the domestic market. Even so, BYD still has to compete fiercely with local brands such as GWM Cannon Alpha and Radar King Kong EM-P who are also eyeing similar segments.
