Local Currency Transaction Users Reach 50 Million People, Airlangga: Exceeds Credit Card Users
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto revealed that users of local currency transactions (LCT) are increasingly in demand. In fact, he said, the number of users has exceeded the current credit card users.
This was revealed by Airlangga at the Investor Daily Summit 2025 entitled "New Economic Order" at the Jakarta Convention Center, Thursday, October 9.
"We also continue to encourage LCT. LCT through the QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) payment continues to increase and the number of users in Indonesia is already more than 50 million. So, this is already higher than credit card users," said Airlangga.
Airlangga explained that the implementation of LCT has been carried out with several countries, including Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, China, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Meanwhile, the countries that have cooperated with LCT are Singapore and India.
The LCT transaction until August 2025 has reached 16.4 billion US dollars. Based on Bank Indonesia (BI) data, the transaction increased by 6.4 billion US dollars compared to the same period last year.

With this achievement, according to Airlangga, many other e-payment providers are starting to worry quickly that Indonesia will implement QRIS in various countries, both in ASEAN and non-ASEAN.
According to Airlangga, if this step is successful, Indonesia will no longer need to use foreign currency for foreign transactions, so that it can help maintain stability in the value of the rupiah.
"If we can do this, we don't use other currency for transactions abroad. Well, this really helps us to maintain our rupiah stability," he concluded.
