Facing Economic Turbulence, Airlangga Suggests Islamic Boarding Schools Save Gold
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto recommended that Islamic boarding schools start considering keeping their funds in gold because this step is considered strategic to protect Islamic boarding school assets from global economic uncertainty.
Airlangga said Indonesia has great potential in the gold industry sector, with a production capacity of around 110 tons per year and is a strong foundation for the development of the sharia economy in the country.
"So of course this can be an underlying for the sharia economy and it is important to keep the savings pesantren in the form of gold. If pesantren saves, saves gold, then of course there will be global economic turmoil whose value is always high, recovery proof and turbulent proof are gold. Now this is what we need to continue to push. So this is what we need to continue to push," he explained at the opening ceremony Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival (ISEF) 2025, Wednesday, October 8.
Furthermore, he stressed, the storage of funds in gold will provide better value protection than other forms of deposits because their characteristics are not easily affected by the crisis, gold is considered suitable as a hedging instrument, especially in the context of the sharia economy.

Airlangga also conveyed the presence of the Golden Bank (Bullion Bank) which was inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto in early 2025.
The Bullion Bank is managed by Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) and Pegadaian, as part of efforts to strengthen the gold-based Islamic financial ecosystem in Indonesia.
