India Allows Biometric Authentication For Digital Payment Systems
JAKARTA Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's popular payment network, has obtained permission to provide an easier verification system. This update will facilitate the transaction process.
Once approved by the local government, UPI will support verification methods through biometric authentication. That way, users can verify the payment using their fingerprints or faces.
This is progress from the country's instant digital payment system. Previously, UPI only relied on verification in the form of a numerical PIN so users needed to remember the password.
Sources familiar with the matter, reported by Reuters, said that this change was made to adjust the guidelines recently issued by the Central Bank of India. One of the things discussed is the use of biometric authentication.

This authentication system will take advantage of data already stored under the government's identification system, namely Ahadhar. The use of registered biometric data is expected to accelerate the payment process for Indian society.
In addition, this new capability is expected to keep millions of users safe. To welcome this launch, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the UPI network, will showcase the biometric technology.
The plan is that this new capability will be exhibited at the Global Fintech Festival which is being held in Mumbai. Through this exhibition, India wants to show that its payment technology continues to develop.
