UN Secretary General Warns Number Of Women Living Near Deadly Conflict Reaches Highest Point
JAKARTA - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Monday that women around the world face "worry trends" over violence, conflict and exclusion, with women living near deadly conflict hitting the highest level in decades.
"Last year, 676 million women lived within a radius of 50 kilometers from the site of the deadly conflict, the highest number in decades," Secretary General Guterres said in a speech at the UN Security Council at an annual open debate on Women, Peace and Security.
She further said sexual violence against girls soared "with documented incidents against girls increasing by 35 percent," and in some places, "girls account for nearly half of all victims."
Secretary General Guterres stressed that despite years of progress, global achievements in women's participation in peace and security are still "fragitive and, very worrying, actually experiencing setbacks."
"In Afghanistan, the systematic elimination of women and girls from public life is rife, with dire restrictions on accessing education, work, health services, and justice, as well as a spike in sexual violence and maternal mortality," he said.
Furthermore, the Secretary-General of the United Nations noted, in "The occupied Palestinian region, Sudan, Haiti, Myanmar and its surroundings, women and girls face serious risks and a terrible level of violence," as women's organizations supporting them are "lack of resources."
Secretary General Guterres urged member states to accelerate their commitment to the agenda of Women, Peace and Security as promised in "Pact for the Future".
"Now is the time for member countries to accelerate their commitment to women, peace and security," he urged.

Unraveling several steps to strengthen women's role in peace development, Secretary General Guterres stressed the need to prioritize five fields: funding, participation, accountability, protection, and binding commitments in law, policies, planning, budgets and national programs.
He also stressed "women's agenda, peace, and security must produce measurable changes."
"More women form peace agreements, security reforms, and recovery plans. Resolution 1325 is clear: Women are peace leaders for all. The world does not need more reminders of that truth; the world needs more results to reflect it," he said.
