Amazed To Be Unable To Stay At Manchester United Without Better Results
Ruben Amorim said he would be naive if he thought he would be allowed to continue as Manchester United manager if the team's poor results continued.
Amorial positions were under intense scrutiny ahead of Sunderland's visit to Old Trafford on Saturday, October 4, 2025.
The Portuguese coach has only won nine of his 33 Premier League games since his appointment 10 months ago.
He admits that it is impossible for one of the club owners, Sir Jim Radcliffe, to continue to show confidence if Manchester United's performance does not improve immediately.
"No one here is naive. We understand that we need good results to continue this project."
"We will reach an impossible point for everyone because this is a very large club with many sponsors, with two owners. So it's difficult, the balance is very difficult," Amorim told a news conference on Friday, October 3, 2025, local time.

The Red Devils will try to extend their unbeaten record against promotional teams, hosting Sunderland this weekend.
Their last defeat was against Watford in November 2021 - the result that prompted the club to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
While four of the nine Amorism league wins were won against promotional teams--Southampton, Leicester, and Ipswich last season, as well as Burnley this season.
However, Sunderland became a significant threat after adapting well in the Premier League, picking up 11 points from their first six matches. This is the best start for a club that has just been promoted from the Championship since West Ham in 2012.
Ahead of the match against Regis Le Bris' team, Amorim faced more pressure to change the 3-4-3 formation, but he reiterated that he would not switch to different formations.
"I'm a club manager, big club. Media is the one who will dictate what I'm going to do? Impossible. Impossible to defend it."
"My biggest problem is the players I trust in you (media) when you say the problem of our team is the system."
"I'm crazy about that because I can see his team. This team has played in different systems over the years."
"You talk about a lack of identity, without ideas, anything. So, the problem is not the system. The problem is in small details, the way we play," said Amorim.
The defeat to Sunderland will further increase pressure on the atmosphere ahead of the international break. There is speculation that the 40-year-old could have resigned before being fired if the bad results continued, but he said only club officials would determine his future.
"No, that's the council's decision. I can't do that. Sometimes I feel like that and losing is difficult."
"It's really frustrating when you create momentum, go to the next game, something happens."
"That feeling is sometimes very painful for me. Likewise the players and especially the staff here. However, it was not my decision."
"I think it would be very difficult to leave if I didn't do everything to advance my career here," said Amorim.
