GWM Prepares First Supercar For 2026, Cheaper Than Ferrari SF90

JAKARTA Great Wall Motor (GWM) is preparing to step into a new segment by presenting its first supercar at the end of 2026. According to GWM Chairman Wei Jianjun, this project has been developed for four to five years and is referred to as China's most true sports car.

The development of this supercar was carried out through a new division called the Ultra Luxury Vehicle Business Group. Wei himself led the division, while the CEO position was entrusted to the former Vice President of GWM Technology, Song Dongxian.

The position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is held by Zhang Xiaobo. Not only that, a number of foreign experts were also recruited to strengthen this ambitious project, as reported by Carnewschina, Saturday, October 4.

Specification leaks state that the GWM supercar will be equipped with a homemade 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 engine combined with an electric motor through plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology. The configuration is targeted to generate up to 1.000 hp of power, with an acceleration of 0.100 km/hour less than three seconds and a maximum speed of more than 350 km/hour.

Ferrari SF90 is said to be a benchmark in developing this model. Even so, GWM plans to offer it at a much lower price, namely around 2 million yuan, or equivalent to IDR 4 billion.

This figure is only half of the SF90 banderol in the Chinese market, so it is predicted that it will attract sports car lovers who want world-class performance at a more affordable price.

For GWM, this step is a big leap. So far, the Chinese manufacturer is better known for SUVs and light trucks. However, with China's automotive trend starting to seriously penetrate the high performance segment, such as the presence of the Yangwang U9 from BYD and the SU7 Ultra from Xiaomi, the presence of the GWM supercar can be a symbol of technological advances as well as efforts to compete with exotic European brands.
