Sweden Proposes The Baltic Sea Security Strengthening Law Following Sabotage To Drones

JAKARTA - Sweden proposes legislation to improve security in the Baltic Sea by expanding the ability of its coast guard to carry out maritime surveillance.

The Baltic Sea area is on high alert following a series of sabotage acts of submarine cable disconnection and gas pipelines in the years following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, as well as recent drone sightings and airspace violations.

"We don't choose our external situation, but we have to face the reality we face," said Sweden's Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin.

NATO, where Sweden is its member, said on Saturday it would step up its mission in the Baltic Sea with air defense frigates and other assets following a drone strike in Denmark.
