Zinedine Zidane's Son Received First Call To The Algerian National Team

JAKARTA - French legend Zinedine Zidane's son, Luca Zidane, was called up by the Algerian National Team (Timnas) for the first time on Thursday, October 2, 2025, local time, for the 2026 World Cup Qualification.

Luca Zidane, a 27-year-old goalkeeper, represents the French national team at junior level, but has never played for a senior national team and is eligible for Algeria through his father's family ties.

FIFA approved a change in national eligibility two weeks ago for Luca Zidane, who played at Real Madrid when his father coached there. He now plays for Spain's second division team Granada.

Algerian coach Vladimir Petkovic has included Luca Zidane in the squad of 26 players for the match against Somalia on October 9, 2025, and Uganda five days later.

Algeria leads Group G of the 2026 African Zone (CAF) World Cup Qualifiers with 19 points from eight points.

They are four points apart from Uganda in second place. Just one win from the remaining two dams will send Algeria to the 2026 World Cup jointly organized by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Algeria have played in four World Cups and reached the last 16 of their last appearance in 2014.

Zinedine Zidane played in three World Cups for France, winning the title in 1998 at home and losing in the final in 2006.

His red card in the 2006 final extra for heading Italy defender Marco Materazzi is part of the history of the World Cup and is his last game as a player.
