Rifat Sungkar Ensures Indonesian WRC Preparations Continue

JAKARTA The preparation for the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Indonesia continues despite the change of the Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora).

Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Motorcycle Association (IMI) for Mobility who is also a national player, Rifat Sungkar, said that the change of Menpora from Dito Ariotedjo to Erick Thohir did not interfere with preparations at all.

"Actually, it's still ongoing, yes, as far as I know, because we are also the new IMI Chair. Even before the change, it has been discussed further," said Rifat.

The implementation of the Indonesian WRC series is still in the assessment stage for 2026 or 2027. This was done when Dito Ariotedjo was still serving as Menpora.

Rifat emphasized that he welcomed the opportunity for WRC's return to Indonesia after previously the world rally event was held in Indonesia in 1996 and 1997.

"If I talk from enthusiasm, I can't be even more enthusiastic because I have been waiting for the WRC for a long time," he said.

The event, which is the second largest motorsport championship in the world - under Formula 1 - is planned to be held in Lake Toba, North Sumatra.

This event is believed to have an impact on increasing sport tourism as well as developing the local and national economy in accordance with the current Government program.

In addition, this will add to Indonesia's promotion to international levels, which had previously been proven in events, such as the 2023 World Motor Boat Championship or F1 Powerboat World Championship (F1H2O) in Lake Toba, North Sumatra.
