Earthquake M 6.5 Sumenep East Java Feels Until Bali, BNPB Reports A Number Of Damages

MOJOKERTO Gempa bumi berkekuatan magnitudo 6,5 mengguncang wilayah Kabupaten Sumenep, Jawa Timur, Selasa 30 September pukul 23.49 WIB. Pusat gempa berada di laut pada kedalaman 11 kilometer, sekitar 50 kilometer tenggara Kabupaten Sumenep. Meski cukup kuat, gempa ini dipastikan tidak berpotensi tsunami.

Shocks were felt for quite a long time, between 3 and 20 seconds, in a number of areas of East Java such as Surabaya, Situbondo, Banyuwangi, Probolinggo, Gresik, Mojokerto, to most parts of Madura. Vibrations were also felt weak to moderate in several areas of Bali, including Gianyar, Buleleng, Tabanan, Denpasar, and Kuta. Residents in a number of areas were reported to have fled their homes to save themselves.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said based on a temporary report until 01.00 WIB, the earthquake had caused damage to four houses in Sumenep Regency. Damage in the form of collapsed walls with debris scattered around the location.

Initial data shows damage occurred in four sub-districts, namely Gayam, Nonggunong, Talango, and Saronggi. There are currently no reports of casualties," Abdul said in his statement, Wednesday, October 1.

BNPB together with the local BPBD continue to collect data and review quickly to verify the impact of the earthquake. The team in the field will continue monitoring on Thursday morning to ensure the latest conditions as well as prepare emergency response measures if needed.

Although there were no casualties, Abdul reminded the public to remain alert to possible aftershocks. He also appealed to residents to avoid cracked buildings, prepare evacuation routes, and ensure the availability of standby bags containing essential basic needs and documents.

"Most importantly, residents are asked to remain calm, not panic, and only follow official information from BMKG, BNPB, and BPBD. Don't easily believe the unclear news," he said.
